LED Bulb Swap

Studies suggest that as much as 10% of household electricity is used to light our homes. New LED light technology is significantly more efficient than those available previously being 30% more efficient than compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL), and 90% more efficient than an old incandescent (filament) bulbs.

We have now completed Phase 1 of “Garforth’s Lightbulb Moment” and you can see what we achieved here.

We are now ready to start Phase 2 working with the Eco-Committee at Ninelands Lane Primary School and jointly funded by Eco-Friendly Garforth and Ridge Road Energy Community Fund and supported by Peases of Garforth.

Parents with children attending the school will be able to order, for FREE, new LED bulbs to replace the older and less efficient CFL and filament lightbulbs. These bulbs don’t have to be broken and we will replace working bulbs to reduce the overall electricity demand. In addition, we will also handle recycling the older bulbs that are being replaced.

Further help is available below and the FAQs at the bottom of the page. You can also contact us at: ecofriendlygarforth@gmail.com

Basic Bulb Types

Incandescent / Filament
An Incandescent or Filament lightbulb

The least efficient light bulbs.
Typically run for 750-2,000 hours before failing.

Compact Fluorescent

Introduced a number of years ago as an energy efficient replacement for the filament bulbs and criticised for slow warm up times and colour quality.
They can last for 5,000 to 10,000 hours before failing.
Sometimes the tubes are hidden by a lightbulb shaped cover.

Notice the shadows of the tubes when light is shone through.
LED bulbs

Are the most efficient bulbs available and also last for a very long time (typically 20,000 to 40,000 hours).
They have addressed the quality issues of the CFL bulbs and produce good quality light immediately they are turned on.
An LED bulb will not have any shadows of tubes seen in fluorescent bulbs.

FAQs

Do you offer dimmable bulbs?

We don’t include dimmerable LED bulbs in our offering as they are not compatible with older dimmer switches. If your existing switch is an old dimmer switch, it may also damage new LED bulbs, old dimmer switches should be replaced to avoid damaging LED bulbs.

Can you swap all bulbs?

Unfortunately we can only currently swap the most comon bulb types. See the bulb type breakdown below to see the bulbs we are offering.

This is a screw fitting type. Sometimes called “E27” or “E14”

Can I have my old CFL bulb back once exchanged?

Your old bulb will be recycled and so will not be available for us to give back to you. Also, it would defeat the object of the exercise which is to take the older, less efficient bulbs out of circulation.

How do I replace a GU10 (spot-light type) bulb?

These can be tricky. This is a really helpful YouTube video: https://youtu.be/USvLN6EDLk4?si=A1R5H86rjPTgsKkr

I’m nervous about changing a lightbulb, do you have any tips?
